Magicians have always existed, they are tricksters and illusionists that abuse their knowledge of physics, chemistry and engineering, with this I'm not trying to say that their magic is fake, is as strong as the illusion they cover it with, this requires huge investment of time and money, mostly materials to build, and it's more secure and powerful than any spell in any metaphysics book .
Greek fire was at some point the highest level of magic and was used in wars and not even today its formula is totally clear. Also you should be careful and not dwindle your chances trying to access sorcery, sorcery is basically magic seen in another existence where physical laws are different.
TL;DR If you want to be a magician learn physics, chemistry and ingenieering and don't let people see how your magic work or you are fucked.
