What do you expect from the producer of one of the dullest groups in the history of jpop groups? Seriously each video from Nakata and his pals in Perfume as they sing assorted tunes has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the productions’ only consistency has been their lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make music unmusical, to make dance seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Nakata vetoed the idea of anyone else directing the MVs; he made sure the group would never be mistaken for a musical production that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for his own benefit. Perfume might be anti-Western (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-jpop group in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the songs are terrible. As I listened, I noticed that every time there was an interval in the verse, the producer wrote instead that the group sing "woooo".

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that exclamation was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Nakata's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of songwriting. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Perfume by the same Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. She wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are listening to Perfume at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to listen to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu." And she was quite right. She was not being ironic. When you listen to "Perfume" you are, in fact, trained to listen to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.
