I don't recall it phasing through armor, after all if it did phase through metal then it'd be hard to ever have epic sword fights as the blades would just pass through each other. Plus there are several techniques described in Word Guide Gaiden 2 that require the mamono realm silver weapons to interact with other weapons, such as one where the monster breaks her weapon in exchange for breaking her opponent's weapon when they collide with each other.
