Actually their original premise was transformation. They were supposed to be priests that had dominated/taken control of demons to use their power against them.
So they transformed into various monsters and fought like that. The problem was that it provided for very limited gameplay due to limited move sets in each form and limited form duration, forcing you to constantly shapeshift. It didn't flow well in any way at all.
So they scrapped the class. They later implemented many avenger ideas into other classes, such as Battlemage's Teana Transform and the Necromancer's "stand" demon, which is the best example of beta Avenger. The necro gets to keep her form though, fixing the issue.
My money is on a dark elemental caster of some kind at this point focusing on the death theme.
