I also thought the first game was too monotonous, but the second one seems quite enjoyable so far, thanks to more mission variety, an actual story (granted, it's nothing great, but good enough to keep me playing) and more stuff to do in general. But yeah, someone who hated the first one as much as you did probably won't like the second game, either.
