how do we even judge legitimate and earnest popularity when so much of the "style" of appreciation here is based on poking fun and shitposting? i feel like we can only really base this on overall thread presence and notoriety rather than honest praise.
it's not like the actual big 4 were selling the most or had the largest followings at the time either. they just had a notable presence in the western conscious and awareness of JAV.
if we're going to take /jav/ as a microcosm then June would probably qualify. Remu would qualify too not because of unquestionable popularity either but for surprisingly similar reasons as June (i.e notoriety); the only claim to greater legitimacy she has is maybe sirs actually recommending and discussing her best codes whereas I seldom see June codes being talked about.

Speaking as a hagchad, I don't think Rieko is the most popular or even the most joked-about hag either. She has a funny "hook" with all the political stuff but it's definitely not enough to be in the /jav/ big 4. I actually don't think any hag really fits into a proposed big 4. They're just too perpetually underrated.

I feel like a case could be made for Nao, Akarin, etc. Also, one or two very vocal sirs frequently posting about their JAVfu for an illusion of notoriety isn't enough, the discussion needs to be more widespread across a wider population of sirs...

but anyways, the updated thread presence tier list should be ready for #1000. i've been taking notes of my observations for a while
