I'm probably having my view of Touhou skewed a bit from recent lore threads' tendency to jump to darker themes (which, I admit, I contributed to by making one of them), but I just lost the ability to see the positive in Gensokyo. I'm new to Touhou, and only had games and PMiSS for lore info untill recently, so my view of Gensokyo got thoroughly destroyed by WaHH and FS. I sperged out about it without thinking on several threads, this being the first unrelated one, sorry for this.
You're still wrong about the villagers though: they know nothing, FS and Lotus Eaters show this.

Mental layer was so vaguely defined in CoLA I didn't think it would contradict what Byakuren said, and I haven't found any more info on it.

Another weird thing about Rinnosuke is that he's a half-youkai at all. Usually children from youkai relationships are either full human or full youkai. Half youkai are incredibly rare and are truly legendary figures, like Abe no Seimei.
