Yes. What happened to the planes is they attacked the Americans preceding the landings and got fucking slaughtered. In fact that's also the reason Turkey had to be used as bait at Leyte. The initial reports coming from the nip pilots looked good so the guy in charge committed all of his reserves to try to smash the USN for good, including all of Japan's newly trained carrier pilots who had been stationed on nearby land bases in preparation for this.
The Japanese had about 1500 planes available and they were absolutely gutted. They lost so many of the carrier pilots the carriers themselves could no longer operate. Nip press and command celebrated it as a huge victory because the pilots claimed to have sunk the entire enemy fleet, including more fleet carriers than the Americans actually had.
