Even non-pretentious novels have to spend a lot of prose on establishing the setting, characters etc (particularly the visual aspect) and require a lot of prose to properly build an atmosphere. There's a lot of extra prose out of sheer necessity. VNs skip most of that, using the visual and audio aspects to give the desired impression, only spending prose on it when it really has to draw the reader's focus. (Frequently they can even skip prose describing events that are happening that moment, being able to just show it using visuals or give the impression via audio.)
