That kind of story works in a vacuum, but not with a character who has been well established as a complete piece of shit in every way, even in his own thoughts.
It's hard to take a Teppei who is at least self-aware enough to understand that he's a piece of shit who shouldn't be around children, and then try to relate it to the guy who gladly humiliated a little girl for funsies. The entire premise of Tatari consisted of him kidnapping Satoko just because he needed someone to cook and clean for him, without even a hint of remorse.

Trying to make a guy like this look better is just a fool's errand.
