Well, I made the keys re-mappable with a pop up box. It's ugly, and most likely highly inefficient, but it works now.

If anyone wants to play around and see if there are any bugs with the new key system, please let me know so I can evaluate and fix.

Blue keys are not re-mappable, red keys are.
