i'll even go as far as to add that wither the player care or not regarding to the characters in the story is a huge part of what differentiates an actual vn and a nukiges.

a good example would be the very recent silky title aishimai 2. what ended up making it so surprisingly interesting was the fact that it started out like any typical nukige, but the way the writer was able to quickly develop the characters and made you care for them. you start to invest more and more emotions as the story progress, and eventually you actually want everything to work out well for everyone, including the good for nothing sleazy main character. i won't say that aishimai 2 is super well written and all that, because it really wasn't. but the way the writer was able to casually connect you emotionally to the characters without ever feeling strong-armed. really does show that dotenmeikai knows his shit, and that elf still got good writing talents
