I took up smoking once because I wanted to understand better why someone would do it.

Blog below:

The first pack did nothing, but after two packs in one month, averaging more than one a day, I did feel some urge to smoke. At no point was the smoke enjoyable, nor did it give me any sort of high; yet, the act of smoking itself felt nice.
I associate the latter to societal influences rather than chemical ones of the cigarette, however.

For a week or so after my last cigarette I did feel like I could have a smoke, just one, but it wasn't too hard to ignore it, even though I had an opened pack. The following month, only during excessive drinking did I feel the want to smoke, but again, it was trivial to ignore.

I can safely say that my experiment was a successful one, even with its short duration. I feel like I more understand smokers, and I can extrapolate how intense the urge must be after just a year, let alone a decade.
I still do not see it as a valuable waste of money, time, or health, but I suppose the normals wouldn't agree with my lifestyle either. I hope smoking continues to be restricted to areas where the only people the smoking will harm are the smokers themselves.

The same way people in the west ask others out, they go to a person they find attractive and may or may not know beforehand and suggest they spend more time together to see if they get along enough to humour the idea of a life together, or for casual sex or whatever.

Confessions are just like that, but more formal, like everything else the japs do. I doubt there's any more actual love involved.

This is something I've wondered as well, and I can confirm there's some rush in it. The thing is, for the first few cigarettes, you're very unlikely to be doing it properly.

As for bias, I'm asthmatic and I think smoking is retarded, but unfortunately I'm even more retarded when drunk.
Drunken me thinks smoking is a great way to break the ice with people, which I suppose is true; though, he also thinks going outside and socializing is a good idea, so whatever.
