I was really surprised by the amount of choices given for what is a small project from a small team, and the overall impressions of openendedness. I am not a virgin when it comes to VN, far from it, but it is surprising how the narrative unfurls almost in-unison with the player's choices, at least at the start.

Maybe it was just me, or I lucked my first playthrough somehow, but it was a weird and gripping pseudo-realism.

The story was alright. I would have liked less twists that weren't properly foreshadowed and often felt like they were just there for the shock value. Soul-link soul-twins murdered but then it was a reincarnation but then you weren't you but you-you want to kill you and is also the big bad. The fact that Tsukihime is smaller than Fate means there is less time to properly appreciate each twist. It can feel like a rollercaster at time, especially when you do Ciel's route first.

I liked Shiki in the beginning, which I felt was a somewhat refreshing character, but by the end of the first route I wanted to punch him in the face and it never stopped. I think this is less an issue with the character than an issue with the plot, which forces him to be completely stupid, to make all the bad choices, to be paranoid and useless, never express his concerns to the rightful people around him, stroll in the vampire infested city at night, and generally acts like a fucking moron. Shiki in Tsukihime is possibly the worst Nasuverse main character I have ever seen, and far worse than Shirou at his worst.

Arc is alright, it's more her chemistry with Shiki which is great. I didn't get Ciel until late, but when I finally understood her archetype I fell in love with her. The sister is great, though more because of a general good archetype than because she's well done. The maid's stories are the best, but then when it comes to it it is a rollercoaster of bad Shiki decisions, weird plot twists, characters being unhelpful, and retarded scenes.

Sacchin was alright tho
