I think it has a lot to do with the difference between buying something you want to have; and buying something you want to impress other people with. To use the sports car anaology; you might buy a BMW because you like the way they look, and are comfortable and have the accessories you want. You get in it and drive away. But someone else will make sure everyone on their facebook feed knows they've just bought a BMW because they're buying it to impress the people around them, rather than because they wanted it themselves.

Most of us here (and /a/'s buyfag community too) buy what we want to have, not what we want to impress others with, so this seems the norm to us. If you want a taste of the other side, go visit mfc.
