Do you see these stars under monsters base stats? They are monster's resists (if you check this pic >>11048083, you'll see that they correspond to all physical attacks). It's a good thing to check monster's weaknesses/resists in youkai encyclopaedia after you've defeated them.
Also, you'll have mana problems till the end of the game. Get used to it.
