In my experience it's all about grinding the stages in practice mode until you feel that you're ready for a longplay. The installments that especially forced me to step up my game were 11 and 12 with their ludicrous difficulty and continue systems; after that I cleared TH13 on my first try and TH14 after one day of rehearsal.
