About the Online version:
While 2kki has its roots in the JP community and the 2chan YN threads. Basically the development story of Online is someone came up with a way to turn EasyRPG engine games into multiplayer, and uploaded it on a github. Initially, it was just YN as a proof of concept.

Soon after, people started talks about how this would specially fit 2kki due to its nature. A little bit after the basic structure was formed and people started playing, the JP devs became aware of the project and requested 2kki online to be shut down, by concerns about how a multiplayer mode would affect the intended experience, as well as the possibility of the project owners fucking with the content the authors made.

2kki was shut down, but talks started between the 2kki devs and the online devs. Back and forth negotiations ended with an agreement for online to host 2kki, as long as a sort of contract was respected: To not modify the ingame files whatsoever, to not claim it's the main "2kki experience", to not overtake or claim ownership over 2kki, and so on. This was not a problem, as all the Online systems are wrappers around the base game files so there was no need to touch anything inside.

2kki online was reinstated, and online devs added content around exploring the game, such as expeditions, badges, chats. Some 2kki devs appear from time to time and lead guided expeditions around the worlds they've made.
