There's arguably less pure science fiction now, but fantasy as a whole is, overall, arguably more plentiful than ever. And I think it's more a matter of perspective. There was always "realistic" anime and there were otaku watching it, it just wasn't made by and for otaku. Now it is, since pretty much the entire industry is run by and for otaku in one way or another.
