The Catholics only lost the global hegemony competition against the Dutch/English because they didn't trust their colonies enough to be armed, fearing revolt.
So everything they did to attain wealth in the colonies kept getting raided/pirated/shat-on by other colonial powers except for the few places where they bothered to station troops, like Mexico and Brazil.

Also unlike the other colonial powers, Catholics mostly just mixed with the natives and taught them Catholicism (completely wiping out the aztecs was unintentional due to old world diseases). The other powers siding with christian reformists literally gained power through piracy and genocides of natives (See africa, india & the east india company, dutch east indies, australia, china). Catholics did nothing wrong.
