As for the covers, I know what you mean and agree 100%. Some of it might even be down to the titles themselves being much longer and more poetic/elaborate/contrived. When you add to that the posing, outfits, the way they often use a combination of horizontal and vertical text to frame the actress, other supporting graphics and design stuff and the result can be really elegant and charming even though a lot is happening in them and could just as easily look too cluttered. Also, we talked about covers recently and quite a few people mentioned preferring covers to be SFW. It's pretty interesting
