Why do so many people bother with learning the meanings for every kanji?

I have been beating my head against this wall for weeks now and grinding through my reps, but I didn't understand why I was doing this when the meanings are often completely unrelated to the actual words that the kanji is used in and memorizing all of these weird mnemonics was just clogging my head with useless shit.

I downloaded a vocab deck though and I'm finally starting to feel like I'm actually making progress.

Why do people learn it the other way though? What's the reasoning behind even touching books like RTK or doing kanji reps? It seems like you will automatically familiarize yourself with kanji as you look up words in a dictionary anyway, but the words themselves seem to be far more important than the meanings of individual characters.
