Everyone in the room froze and all the wandering, uncomfortable eyes looked at me. Even Nue’s, yes, I see you hiding back there in the shadows, jaw slightly dropped.
Hijiri knelt beside me and felt my stomach. Then raised and kicked me hard in the side. Like a soccer ball I flew into the air and just barely my chair touched the ceiling, before falling onto her fist.
As I gagged, I looked into her eyes. She was no longer smiling, and any false pretense was gone. She was livid.
“You truly are contemptible.” Hijiri said as I fell to the floor.
“Thanks.” I gagged. “I really-“I spit out before she gags me with a rope, tying it tightly around my head.
“When I saw you with Goro first, I was hopeful. That man had dealt with youkai far more dangerous and malevolent then you and never cursed anyone. He truly wished the best for everyone, even his enemies. But in the end, you just had to use him for your own twisted gratification, cursed him, and…” Her face twitched “…you even soiled him afterwards?”
What remarkable praise!
“You were pretty lucky that we found you first actually.” The Nazrin replacement (except she was rat) spoke up, whatever her name was, Chizhao? “Plenty of other people have a vendetta on you for this. It’s not like last time where I heard you just had a price on your head.” She remarked.
“It’s because Goro was never dishonest and didn’t patronize anyone!” Ichirin interjected. “He didn’t pity you or act condescending! He’d always made sure his deals where fair, and all parties benefited! He accepted everyone as they were and you…” She began, clenching her teeth. “…even when he accepted an Amanojaku like you, you still betrayed him!”
Was she speaking for herself, Unzan, or both?
“He was fool hearty sure.” Murasa chimed in. “But when he was just a lad and I helped him fish up his father’s corpse, he still sold everything he had to buy me hooch as payment uh,” She stuttered, realizing she’d probably just earned herself a punishment for drinking several years in the making. “Ah hell, he practically drowned my skirt in tears that night.”
What was this, a wake?
“When he discovered his ability, he confided in me first. When I asked him why when I had made such poor use of my own well…” Shou began, tightening her grip on the spear “…he told me it was cool how I could still look so confident regardless.”
“His fear would always spike when making a deal, the unknown between him and his client, that was his favorite thing.” Nue spoke from the shadows.
“Seija.” Hijiri began, untying the rope gag from my head. “Speak your piece and then we’ll decide what to do with your.”
Finally.
“You’re all a bunch of sad losers and hypocrites.” I spoke.
