This (at least until I'm N1), although the real reason is I was looking to learn another foreign language with interesting grammar like German or Russian, but Japanese has more ressources and a bigger community, which makes learning easier and more fun.
Also work opportunities in Tokyo / Osaka would bring me closer to home.
I guess anime is a bonus.
