At length, the passage became narrower and the steps larger until, at last, after nearly an hour's journey through through the darkness my torch quivered, catching a slight breeze.

I paused, then lifted my hand from the wall and extended my hand into the darkness.

The darkness was thick, here. Almost like the flesh of some living creature, the blackness curled and was kneaded itself around the torch, my hand and my body -- as if trying to overturn it, like a ship caught between two prevailing winds.

I extended my fingers further into the dark.

Something smooth and cold.

Running my hands over the wall, it became clear that this was no natural formation. I was getting closer.

Keeping my hand on the wall, I continued to walk.
