My local area has a few famous monks, notably Bede, who wrote and translated a lot of works in the 8th century. They weren't just Biblical works either—he wrote one of the most important texts on English history, and it's still frequently used as a reference today. He also wrote and translated books on science and music.
Don't underestimate how much monks have done for us, even if you disagree with the religious views they held.
