A mix of both since following canon only could you to hate some characters like Reimu who's been butchered in FS lately.

If I've already done most of the first two core 2000 decks and picked up an odd 200-300 kanji, but don't really know the first thing about grammar, is it possible to make further steps by forking text from ero games, putting the kanji I don't know in anki and translating the rest until I eventually get the gist of how sentences work in Japanese?

Not the same guy, I'm legit curious. I hate picking up a textbook and learning just for the sake of it, without any immediate payoff. A bit childish, I understand, but I much prefer practice over theory. Memorizing hundreds of kanji on anki just got terribly boring to me after a while, when I figured that because of my grammar weakness, I couldn't really apply it anywhere.
