Reimu is not an undead zombie. She never was, and never will be. The roots of her affliction are far deeper than that.

Reimu, you see, is an undead Lich.

Way, way back, in the second Touhou game, Mima gave an explanation of the ying-yang balls Reimu uses. The Hakurei Orbs absorb their user's power, storing it until they overflow and it is released in a single surge of energy.

For an ordinary shrine maiden, this wouldn't be a problem. But, one day, a certain young shrine maiden killed a few too many youkai, spent a little too much power. Her body, drained beyond the brink of death, had no power left to be absorbed. And so the Orbs took what was left: her very soul.

The energy of the orbs reanimated her body, but her soul has become trapped forever. And so, stripped of its core, her body began to decompose. The Shrine Maiden's spirit was perverted by the dichotomy of the Yin and Yang; she was divided between her moral engine, seeking absolute justice, and her murderous instinct, seeking absolute destruction.

The last Hakurei Shrine Maiden died that day, born again as Reimu the Destroyer.

What can anyone hope to achieve when some crazy-as-balls Shrine Maiden decides to summon 8 million Gods on your stupid ass ?
