It's really not that hard to understand. It's not about the new art being good. It's about the original art being "bad". People who've stuck with them long enough may acquire a taste for them. But at the end of the day it's still an acquired taste, not something that immediately appeals to most people when they first see it. While it may be more expressive, from a formalist design standpoint, which is what the average viewer goes by, the art is objectively poor. The proportions are wonky and look like something out of old KEY vns. The bangs have more detail than the rest of the body combined. The highlights are done with a dodge tool instead of lighter colors, making the bright areas look whitewashed. And of course there's the hands. All this stuff adds up and makes the sprites unappealing to your typical viewer.
