I wonder though if Yukari was originally a human but became a youkai through unknown means thousands of years ago.

Lady Yakumo Yukari, the oldest and most powerful amongst youkai in Gensokyo.

She is truly a magnificent noblewoman. She has had her hand in creating the impenetrable barrier that separates their world from the world of the humans, oversaw the immigration of the youkai into Gensokyo at its conception, and weakened reality itself within their realm.

Intelligence? Not only is she capable of immense numerical calculations in the blink of an eye, she can control the very boundaries of the worlds to the point of traveling through unharmed.
Not to mention, of course, her successful attack upon the Lunarian Empire at a certain point in Gensokyo's history, marking her as an impressive military campaigner. Cersei Lannister need look no further if she wished to behold Lord Tywin with teats - Lady Yakumo is more than his rival in strategics, skulduggery, and dominance.

Most definitely dominance. Even her first interview with Aya had her disciplining her submissive to introduce her! It makes me...shiver.

Yes, I cast my vote for Lady Yakumo Yukari as my certain favorite amongst Touhous.
