In contrast to the ship girls, the Abyssals are monster girls with a more organic and synthetic approach to their equipment. I can understand why someone new to the series could be immediately more interested in them and might pass the ship girl's designs off as generic. Though I'm sure it helps that there are much less Abyssals to design than ship girls.
