Seeing others in positions of pain and suffering is quite cathartic when one is in a similar position. This is a researched phenomena.

Being surrounded by happy people doing happy, enjoyable things while one is depressed can just make one even moreso.

In a time where it felt like my life was crumbling before me, I found playing Higurashi, Yandere, guro VNs, and other series with intense suffering to be extremely calming and enjoyable.
It made me really rethink my perspective on artists who typically draw rather violent, cruel, or depressing things. Normal people tend to think such artists are bad, twisted people but the opposite is usually true. I met Toshio Maeda in real life, and he was an extremely chill and kind person.
