Not only their appearance is based on mythology, but also their abilities. Mythological basilisks have an extremely potent venom in their body, they can kill a human with just their gaze. Sometimes their gaze will cause petrification, or they might even have a poisonous breath, or petrification breath. They may have venomous stingers that can kill with a single sting... Sometimes, they can kill just from you hearing their voice. Generally, they have been treated as horrible monsters.

Due to this horrible origin, and them having magic eyes with a very potent venom in the Encyclopedia's world, I decided on them hiding their faces behind masks.

In addition, maybe their other senses have been amplified due to their vision being sealed, or them simply being shy, but they have a weakness against human men's voices and smell. The inspiration for this comes from the mythological Basilisk's supposed weakness against the smell of weasels, or a rooster's cry.
