I recently realized that I can read anything I see, but I have no idea what any of it means. I thought I had accomplished something when I finally firmly drilled kanji into my head and before that when I memorized the kana, but now the obstacles ahead seem so much bigger. If it took me nearly a year just to get down the ABCs of Japanese then how long will it take me to understand the complex grammar rules and an entire vocabulary?

It's like being able to read romaji. Anyone can do it if they can read English but none of it will make any sense. Why do people act like learning kanji is such a big accomplishment? It's nothing. I still don't understand anything.
