Well they can beat most opponents with just a touch, and have the whole "awesome ectoplasmic claws" thing going for them, as well as having potentially once been human royalty or great heroes. They also seem to be more interested in being charismatic leaders compared to vampires who just want to enjoy being aristocratic nobles. And some may not like having to feed a vampire their blood.

There's also the appeal of having the option to "evolve" a normal zombie into a wight.

But I'd say above all else the incredibly sexy design is the wight's biggest draw. After all the phantom is another "evolve" form of another monster and she hasn't gotten near the popularity.
