Let's talk historical drama

I've been watching Three Kingdoms a lot lately and started wondering if there are any really good Sengoku series out there. Anything you guys are currently watching?
There's, of course, the Taiga dramas but that is an incredibly long running hit and miss sort of deal.

I recently watched Seven Samurai (yes, I know I'm way behind) and that was a pretty damn great movie. I've got Hidden Fortress and Rashomon next on the list.

So let's go; Period drama thread.

This may or may not be the best place to ask, but what is the fascination with this man and that period in Japan's history in otaku culture?

The hero, the villain, reincarnated, alternated, genderswapped, the whole shebang. There are two anime this season in which the protagonist is related to him.

Missing out some driving factors of art here - popularity and acceptance.
Japan was exposed to Western schools of art in the 16th century. It just never caught on.
