You could say that all people hide their real identities to some degree to fit in - especially all kinds of youtubers and people whose success depends on being liked by majority.
Now you could say the same about vtubers, but there is also great freedom in anonymity (as all on this site should already know). Those hidden behind the avatar can create greater illusions, but at the same time they can act in a way that is closer to who they really are.
Obviously we can never know for sure if they really do; maybe they lie to us, maybe they are disgusted by their fans and just care about money, but what's there to gain from assuming worst in people? Maybe they are just shy, fat or ugly and would never be given a chance to show their great personalities if it wasn't for their cute avatars? Maybe they just want to have fun?
I like vtubers because they feel more intimate. I may be a fool for believing them, but at least I am a happy fool. Perception is person's reality. They can motivate me or just provide a source of great entertainment. And if they are lying, it's their loss for not being wonderful people that they pretended to be.
