One more observation on the "why do people buy them" thought:

I moved into an apartment that was furnished, and the previous occupant had left a bunch of slightly-used stuff she didn't need to get me started out. One of the bedding items was a big pillow - not dakimakura size, but at least half as long as my body. I've always had a habit of bunching up my blankets to hold when I sleep, so I gave it a try, and holy shit. Nothing calms me faster or helps me sleep better than having a huge pillow to squeeze.

I don't have any covers for it or anything (it'd probably be too small to fill one anyway, but I'd consider getting one if I ever found one I really liked (if only Liarsoft made covers as preorder tokuten ;__; I'd cuddle a Mary or Lily pillow SO HARD). Once you get used to having one there beside you, you never go back.
