I feel kinda out of breath listening to this, as if there was too much sound filling but little actual instrumentation. Probably this violin section all around. Bring the Guzheng up, dry the violins a little (unless the overwhelming sound of it is intentional).

>How does one wrap their head around modes? It's scales that start from something other than the tonic, right?
Yes, right. It doesn't change much in terms of harmony or anything, you will usually have the same progression logic taking place, just shifted a bit.

The song I've made here >>12642032 is a typical folk music in that it uses Ddorian (verse) and Gmixolydian (chorus).
The verse progression is:
ii iii IV V vi V iib iii ii

The chorus progression is:
V Ic iic I IVc IV ii7 V

If we consider the D and G as 1 in their respective parts, this is like going

[1]234[5]412[1]

[1]454[5]77[51] < perfect cadence

I don't play any instrument, but if you are guitarist, it is useful to learn how to play modes in terms of muscular memory, skipping frets just like you do with the major/minor scale (which are 2 modes out of the 7).

About your track, it has a sorta generic electro David Gueta feeling to it, how about spicing it up with some harsher sound or atmosphere? But it sounds well done.
