The only part about UBW that was a 1:1 adaptation of the VN was the Lancer vs Archer fight at the church.
Coincidentally the best part of the anime.

Barrier without a doubt is a good trait to have. That point was driven home to me in the custom adventure made for Kai where Father Yorgen and his army did 12 million+ damage. I'm happy that went to my barrier instead of to my HP.

Barrier is a pricey AP purchase though. It costs 2000 AP. Alternatively with 2000 AP, you can increase your speed several times, 20 points each, or get 100 bonus points to spend on skills. For a pet it's 30 points each for AP to speed and 400 bonus points to be used on skills.

The way barrier works is that damage goes to MP instead of HP. When your MP is reduced to a 1/3 of the total amount barrier shuts off. Due to this, barrier's value improves as you level up, and possibly use magic fruit, to get more MP. So depending on your level and mana attribute, barrier might not be as valuable early on since the actual amount your MP can be used to shield you might not be considerable enough to justify the purchase.

So one of the factors of whether it is time to pick it up is if you have MP to burn. This factor is doubly important to consider for spell casters who use their MP to also attack. If you're not a spellcaster then you need to weigh whether or not the amount of current MP that acts as a damage sponge is worth putting off for a bit an increase in speed and skills.

Getting barrier was one of my later purchases for both my character and pets. I mainly focused on raising speed and skills. As I leveled my character and my pets got stronger, it became easier and easier to justify the purchase of barrier. So eventually I got barrier.I just didn't get it immediately. So that's what I did but if you want to just get it out of the way for peace of mind that's understandable too.

I didn't see the shield parry as a teachable special action on any of my pets. Shield bash itself I think is now a gauge attack for shield wielders.
