The thread is some Lunarian larp shitpost that went over the head of some anons, but that and OP's verified faggotry aside: I forgot about SPELL, I read the first chapter when an anon dumped it in a thread here and I didn't remember to follow up.
I liked it, it shows that Youkai can be dangerous and threatening (to be fair Roomba was powered up by Remilia) and just how big of a gap there is between Humans and Youkai, and contrasts it with how fairly safe things are now with spellcard rules; where getting an attitude adjustment to curb your ambitions is a rite of passage for newcomers to Gensokyo. The backstory for Reimu where she undergoes a classical hero's development and her relationship with Yukari is cool as well.
I'd say that expansion on lore is a blessing and curse. Expansion means there's more connections and bits of canon to pull from, such as Ran's connection with Toutetsu and the Animal Realm lore; but it also means that things get 'reconned' from a fanon perspective. For example there's lots of doujins about Yukari and Ran's origins which gets pushed from plausible out to pure fanfiction. Even so, I'd say these kinds of far out stories aren't going to die off or go anywhere even after there's new stuff. Creators are still going to write the story they want to tell in Touhou, and there's enough ambiguity and half-truths to do a lot of things and justify it with enough interpretation and mental gymnastics, and that's not going to change no matter how much ZUN adds. Pircrel is always going to be relatable and long standing fanon interpretations and memes aren't going to change much.
