Iwaihime probably got better reviews because it's way more "conservative" in terms of structure and in the way it handles its themes than anything R07 has done since Higurashi.
Umineko was metafictional to the point of absurdity and challenged peoples views on religion, truth and love
Higanbana had a short story format and dealt with school bullying as its main theme, which is not something most escapists will feel comfortable with
RGD did the whole parallel storytelling across different time periods thing, was overtly political, dealt with japanese nationalism and ended in tragedy and despair
Iwaihime has a group of friends doing club activities until tragedy occurs because of [insert supernatural horror here] but it's okay because timeloops.

Completely disagree. Stories like Yuno, 999, Umineko, are all stories that require the VN medium to be told at their best.

Yuno needs you to have a map feature to fully visualize the branches of the world line. Telling it in a book is ineffective because you would have to cover all of the branches and it would look really clumsy. Plus the visualization of the worlds helps a lot in connecting the plot.

999 fully exploits its medium. Both the two screen concept and the branching plot structure are perfectly executed. The twist hits harder when you have the screen division and allows for the best scene in the game to work.

Umineko constantly shifts between on-board and off-gameboard events. Without the visual distinction, you would break narrative flow too much by using *** marks or some other form of distinction for the metaworld shifts. Plus the tying of music to scenes is done really well.

The VN medium works at its best in parallel worlds or timeloop scenarios because it assists with the creation of distinction without adding continuous narrative burden (i.e. MLA, having to describe outfit changes between worlds, etc) and allows them to flow smoothly. It's not a coincidence that nearly the highest rated VNs almost all involve timeloops and parallel worlds. It's what the medium does that other mediums really can't do quite as well.
