i'm fine with a little (to whatever extent) challenge, i just dont like super moe shit. i'm just basing my choices off of jamal's list, would rather be challenged than suffer while reading and listening

your first time reading will always be hard even if you did core 6k and read every single grammar point there is, just jump into it and get your feet wet, it will be very hard at first, just don't burn out, heres some recommendations

Master hiragana and katakana, learn some kanji and grammar. After that, pick up an easy VN and read it with a text hooker like ITHVNR

I began to read visual novels after 2000 kanjis on anki but I probably should have started it sooner

Hello,

for easy anime people generally recommend kemono friends, but others I found easy early on where yuru camp, koe no katachi(amazing movie btw), non non byori, and flip flappers. Give the show you watch some time as it takes a bit to get used to the speech of a show even if the show is reletively easy.

Also as you mentioned vns, I know people here hate leddit but the visualnovel sub is actually very helpful for learners. Set up the text hooker and you will learn the words and kanji no core or flashcards required.

here is there compiled recommendation list:

Are you adamant about using chiitrans? This list here shows AoKana as not needing any hook so I don't think you'd have any trouble using ithvnr
