From my understanding, yes, in America it's true libertarianism is the only solution for sustenance of Japanese adult content being imported. But, almost paradoxically even libertarianism has neo-authoritarians who would sell out to China or Korea and destroy relations with Japan if it made them more profit. With the tide turning, this will only become more common in ideologies that put priority on personal gain. It is why I believe in my country the left wing is the better hope for good relations with Japan, but it's possible this will change. There really isn't any libertarianism here, so if the left turns against Japan, then that would be terrible. Many liberals have of course turned against Japan, these are the type you'll think mostly as Democrats in America, because they're attacked from both sides with anti-Japanese sentiment and their only priorities are making personal profit and saving face so they don't do business with Japan anymore because they're scared of the lolis and boobs.

There was the saying "sex sells", feminists and conservatives have been trying for decades to stop making it true but only now they're having success. With Japanese products, it's easier for them to turn public perception on their side. The average person thinks "disgusting" if they see loli manga or bestiality or necrophilia or other fetishes, and this is what is used to show how "harmful" Japanese media is. It's the same old tactic used in past decades, but always in past decades relations with Japan were so good that the positive perception outweighed the negative. Now it's a balancing game, half love Japan and half hate it. China invests heavily in this, of course. I don't know how directly they do it in other countries but here they do it very directly by funding the parties that are anti-Japanese.

Making "sex sells" an obvious truth again, would be a very good step in the right direction. It's an unfortunate spawn of the old feminism that the new feminism, which no longer has any real significant issues to be against or to push for, turns more puritanical. It's a cycle, ironically causing its own downfall. Its downfall alone isn't enough anymore, because the opposing force is just as bad. People now don't have the attention spans to see this, so they blindly support any movement that says something they like to hear without even thinking of its implications.

Consider teen erotic magazines. I'm not sure about other countries but when they became illegal here, it wasn't because people no longer were attracted to teens or because there was a change in laws first. It was started by the idea that local production must be boosted. When local production was cracked down, imported teen erotica was made illegal as well. Most of it was Japanese. This had two effects, one, that teens had abundance of Japanese teen erotica and this gave them a good perception of Japan but, two, that their parents wanted to shelter them from it. It didn't create a wave of anti-Japanese sentiment, but this was because the relations with Japan were so good. Now similar things are happening, however, the difference is that relations with Japan are deteriorating as the dependence on China grows and economic stability requires being sensitive to Chinese interests. It's very worrying.

You might say it was Coco who left and not Cover who fired her. Well, Japanese love doing what's called 追い出し部屋 (banishment room), which is extremely overused in Japan due to the labor laws making hard to fire someone.
