Being self-taught it sort of is a variety of things. My pronunciation is medeocre, though. I just pick up a dictionary and a grammar packet and try to translate as many books and instruction pamphlets as I can. When a Kanji presents itself, I just use a Jouyou Kanji book to look it up. 99% accuracy there, but if it fails, I just use the web. Not too familiar with Heisig, so I'm not too knowledgable here.

Everyone learns differently. I personally use repetition for readings in context and taking the character apart and putting it back together by radical for writing. It works well, I learn about twelve a week at this rate.
