The Lunar Capital being actually time travelers somehow can somewhat explain how they are so old. I had another theory that is that the Lunar Capital has some control over the Earth and what happens in the Hifuu albums may be them.

I disagree, Reimu going off the deep end would've been rather hard on Remi. All sources i can think of that show their relationship post-EoSD show a good friendship where they engage in deep talks often. Remi considers Reimu interesting and would've been very disappointment by her degeneration and the destruction of Anon. Though arguably she would've cared for him less, they would've still been friends.
Other humans? If they're not interesting I doubt she'd care much beyond whatever merciful/mean-spirited whim she had at the moment.

>If I was in charge of the story Okina would've already forced Aunn and Hana into a shotgun wedding
Wouldn't make much sense, fat chance even Okina could have the political capital to marry the Hakurei to an aspect of herself. Be a fun attempt at least, Seeing Reimu have to get off her ass and show Okina whats gonna happen to Yukari for molesting her daugther would be a fun side story.

You don't have to rewrite the wheel for the game and I wouldn't expect such for it. 10 was a big refresh that added a major fashion and started a series of consecutive plots, and 15 finally gave us a serious in-game plot surrounding the Lunar Capital along with lore expansions along with Hell and the Dream World. Both of these could be argued as milestones in the story, but if you look at the games they're still typical Touhou experiences. 10 in fact was the game that would set forward the whole modern template going forward. Much as I'd like something ambitious, this is worth keeping in mind just for what to expect. I got a feeling the plot is going to introduce something major, although you could argue that's also down to timing with 18 and 19 coming off more as lore expansions rather than evolving the overall story.

In actual 2hu canon? They are related to Eirin and one of them is Toyo's son, that's all we know.
Their legend counterpart are also kinda barren, Yori's is Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto (picrel) who doesn't prominently feature in any stories aside from the one of his birth, in which Toyotama-hime, Toyo's legend counterpart, had to turn into a shark/crocodile thing to give birth. It is not explained how or why he married Tamayori-hime, Yori's counterpart, but it must've been real important considering that union gave life to freaking Jimmu. So he was born from a weird fish and is the father of Japan's first emperor. Not much.
Toyo's husband, Hoori has much more meat to him. Hoori was a hunter who had lost his brother's fishing hook, looking for it he wandered into the bottom of the ocean, instead finding Toyotama-hime, who helped look for the lost item. They later got married and Hoori spent three years living together, until Hoori got homesick (remember this one fact for the later part where I give my conspiracy theory). Hoori gave back the hook and Toyotama-hime got pregnant, making Hoori swear to not look at her while giving birth, which he does and discovers her true form. Toyotama-hime in shame goes back to the sea, never to return. Hoori later becomes ruler of a town and for half a century.
Now, that is what we know for certain and what the myths tell us, but I have reason to believe Mizue no Uranoshimako, the fisherman who found his way into the Lunar Capital and got cared for by the sisters, to be the same person as Hoori, and therefore, Toyo's husband.
This theory isn't the most sound one out there, I am by no means a 2hu lore expert, much less a knower of Eastern folklore, but I still believe there are some details said in CiLR that seemed odd.
First, the confirmation of the sisters marriage status. This one always rubbed me the wrong way, it seems almost out of character for ZUN to add an actual married character, much less one who is married to her own nephew. It comes out of the blue too, just Eirin casually saying it. It got me thinking about the intent behind such an odd addition, say you wanted to make your normally derivative characters into much closer to the source material, well, you do it by giving them characteristic from said material! Thus, Yori marries her sister's son, just like in the legend.
Kinda flimsy, I know, but that was what got me thinking...
Mizue no Uranoshimako is another name for Urashima Taro, a common folktale. It goes pretty much like it was described in chapter three of CiLR, fisher finds himself in a magical place, spends a while there, gets homesick, returns to his home to find himself centauries in the future and opens a box which ages him instantly. Some differences here and there, like how he was put in cryogenics to make him return 300 hundreds years later instead of time just passing differently, but...
There is another modification to the original which changes everything (cont.)

First of all, any and all claims stating that one Moon Princess is, and I quote, a perverted nephew fucker addicted to having immoral, incesteous, all-night long, breeding sessions over and over again are, obviously, mere propaganda seeking to sully the great Capital's pure, pristine image. Much like anyone peddling the unfounded rumor that another Princess seeks out rough, unwashed earthling men, they must be ignored and reported to the LCI central(Lunar Correct Information central) for reeducation.
That said, if I were to hypothetically seduce my nephew, this is how I'd hypothetically go about doing it:
First of all one must get a nephew, for that you must have a close relative with a husband and son (very rare), and it MUST be a relative, otherwise the thrill of such taboo encounters is lost. Hypothetically.
Second, you need to monopolize your nephew as soon as possible, young boys are prime targets for lecherous old hags who aren't even related to him at all! In fact if you were to, hypothetically, lock him in a training facility for his entire childhood under false pretenses and only allowing yourself to interact with him, you can keep him safe from any lewd women. You can also take advantage of these key formative years to mold him into the perfect husband!
Now, as your nephew grows from a boy to a man you can move on to step three, perhaps the most crucial, become the ideal of sexuality in his eyes. During training, let yourself be grabbed on unfortunate areas, insist on sharing a shower past the appropriate age, "accidentally" leave your worn underwear in easy to locate spots, use your imagination! As long as you plague his late night fantasies, you're golden. A-and make sure to check the security feed of his room during these times, just to guarantee he's thinking about the right lady. Hum, hypothetically.
And for the final part of the nephewhusband plan, up the ante. Go way bolder, openly tease him, massage his muscles, flash him, etcetera, but claim innocence. The day will come when he snaps and takes you; you got him at last. Use the morning after, when the weight of what he did all on his own with no prior manipulation by your part settles in, to gaslight him into marrying you, make sure to cry a lot and say things such as: "How could hurt your own aunt so much?!", make him feel really guilty... hypothetically.
And just like that! You now have a cute, servile,
always ready nephew! If he starts stepping out of line just threaten you're gonna tell everyone what he did and the problem should go away in a flash.
Hypothetically.

I still hold that this was just a (drunk) mistake, given how Toyohime in CiLR clearly just made up the stuff about the Lunar Capital being the Dragon Palace, and that kind of lie would sound really silly if the Palace actually is right there.
It's just a part of the lore that becomes completely incoherent even if you think about it for only five seconds.

Lunarians, electing to live forever, routed impurity from themselves and from their environment (The moon/Lunar capital). "Purity" is the rejection of both life and death. Fairies, beings of pure life-force, conflict with this and as such were used by Junko and Hecatia on the moon to make certain areas of it uninhabitable to the lunarians in LoLK. By drinking the Hourai elixir, Kaguya effectively acknowledged the concept of death, thus making her impure and resulting in her banishment from the moon.

Heavenly Gods Watch party

In the center of the most important civilization, situated inside a multilayer barrier, surrounded by four oceans, and with countless slaves, artisans, technicians, and scientists attending to its every desire, the Dragon Palace sat lifeless, still, and as pure as ever as it overlooked the impure earth.

In the center of the most important civilization, situated inside on a cloud, surrounded by golden light, and with countless Deva, Celestials, and creatures of higher realms attending to its every need, The Dragon Palace sat resplendent.

But in one corner of that pure horse, sat a coalition of unlikely friends gathered around a remote viewing screen as they watched the eastern paradise below through the eyes of their noisy messengers and spies.

“Sister, pass me the popcorn will you?”

“Very well, Yorihime.” The resignation was feigned and over-emotional intone, contradicting the flat looks of the faces of the sister gods and the enraptured emotions that tugged at their heartstrings as they watched a madman, whose only notable achievement was fathering a gloomy bookworm, babble about youkai.

The Most Awesome and Terrifying Duo: The Watatsuki Sisters

“I do not understand what you see in this show, especially that ‘Goro Ackechi.’” He said the bookish man’s name with suspicion. “A real man would take his wife, not subject himself to the humiliation of being taken.” The warrior god who sat on the opposite side of the couch them complained.

Renown for the Strength of his Blade: Takemikazuchi

“Come on you shitty old man! You’re just jealous you aren’t in her position.”

The Devic Delinquent: Tenshi Hinanawi

“What is this brat even doing here, I thought we were on the moon?”

“No, we’re in heaven!” The bratty celestial complained as she pointed out of a window, the golden light of the heavenly realms streaming through.

“I suggest you look outside the window, pipsqueak.” The gargantuan god had risen, his full height towering over the celestial of which he was many times the age.

“I know for a fact I haven't left the heaven realms you-”

“It’s on both, if you have a problem with it, take it up with Lord Dragon God.” Yorihime had long since stopped questioning the Dragon God’s decisions, even though she too had little patience for the odd celestials and their Buddhist bureaucracy.

“Now shall we return to the show, perhaps the snake god shall finally do something of interest, yes?” Toyohime continued.

“That pitiless welp of a goddess had half the brain her brother and father had, she will not amount to anything.” Takemikazuchi dismissed with a wave of his hand as the viewing screen switched to a crow’s eye view of the Moriya shrine.

“The same goddess who you spared, allowing her to subjugate the up-jumped fairy-turned-frog god,” Torahime noted. Of course, as the Lunar capital had its own Imprisoned froggy goddess who nonetheless was an executive of sorts, the sisters were more than hypocrites in this matter.

The sword god scoffed. “I did her a great justice by crippling her and confining her to that meager portion of the impure earth.” waved a hand as if to imply both the sister's comments and Kanako were much beneath him. “Perhaps whenever that rabbit or another part finally makes their move on our paradise, she could be granted to honor of losing to me once again.”

“Ah…” A smile bloomed on Yorihime’s face. “I suppose this is what the inhabitants of the earth would call a ‘tsundere,’ am I correct dear sister?”

“You damn!-”

“I believe we are here for a watch party, not for a spat between you too,” Toyohime complained as she spread her fan, fanning herself with it as she eyed the two gods.

Takemikazuchi and Yorihime crossed their arms as they sat back down and turned their gazes away from each other.

“Pffff, hah!” The delinquent exploded in laughter

The warrior god, famed for inserting himself onto his own sword in order to threaten the woman he humiliated and her useless brother frowned but did not respond at the celestial's taunting laughter.

Toyohime, seeing the destitute state of the mood, grabbed the controller, switching from the crow sent to monitor the Myouren temple idol to the crow's view of the vengeful spirit turned wannabe god. “How about we see what that vengeful spirit has been up to.”

“Yes, if my meager opinion is worth your time, I too would like to return to the show.”

The most Extraordinary and Burdened Mudfish Maid: Iku Nagae

The viewing screen flickered, then split into two, each screen showing a perspective of a bird as birds each held their view on Gensokyo’s upcoming god and the wicked Hermit she battled.

“I see something interesting has finally begun,” Takemikazuchi said as he sat forward.

“Damn that Hermit, she never does anything I tell her to,” Tenshi complained as Mima was pushed backward by the abomination.

Something like Dark Realm from Raidou Kuzunoha series should be sufficient.
https://megamitensei.fandom.com/wiki/Dark_Realm
>The Dark Realm is almost indistinguishable from the Capital's "real" dimension except for the different lighting and the fact there are no humans on its streets: most of the Dark Realm's inhabitants are demons of several sorts, depending on the area.
I played the game and interacted with non-hostile demons on the Dark Realm, which was kind of hilarious for me. There is a Gashadokuro youkai, complete with a huge, menacing skeleton body but with the default personality of a typical housewife.

The Netherworld is also a pure realm, Yuyuko and Youmu never got harassed and spent a whole month fucking around on the Moon.
They probably have a fairly close relationship considering that several Lunarians are original deities and the very top hierarchy of them. Lord Tsukuyomi founded the Lunar Capital and is the brother to Amaterasu. "The residents of the Lunar Capital are closer to celestials and hermits than humans." Celestials are a also type of Hermit.
>>46519106
ZUN did state in that same interview that there are many connections between the various places. Heaven and the LC might be figuratively next door to each other in the cosmological sense, they're both pure lands and the Lunar Capital was likened to being similar to a Hermit's residence. And the Japanese love their Side A Side B shit, so the Dragon Palace could be in both places at once like how the Hakurei Shrine has a Gensokyo and Outside world counterpart. Probably not worth thinking too hard about as where's and hows are all muddied by metaphysical mumbo jumbo and funny boundaries.

>with the Dragon Palace being moved to the Lunar Capital
I don't buy any of that.
The first mention of the Dragon Palace clearly makes it out as a lie Toyohime feeds Urashimako, and there's no further mention of it ever being on the Moon, other than a one-off sentence in an interview in SoPM.
But since it makes so little sense, given the Lunar Capital's isolation and Iku clearly associating with Heaven but not the Lunar Capital (who wouldn't give a shit about warning humans), I'm inclined to believe it's just a mistake on ZUN's part, and the Palace is still either somewhere under the sea or near Heaven.

Also don't forget that Heaven and the Lunar Capital blatantly have connections with each other although the full extent of it aren't known, they are both said to be "pure" realms devoid of impurity and death, they both have somewhat snobbish inhabitants that look down upon earth dwellers, they both enjoy peaches, and Iku is actually a messenger from the Moon (dragon palace is the same as the lunar capital iirc)

Celestials and Lunarians definitely have a relationship, but what kind of relationship, we cannot know.

The Dragon Palace is also in Heaven, somehow, I imagine it's like Eientei.
ZUN says there are connects if you look for them but Heaven doesn't seem to be the moon, so I think the palace itself is just weird.
