I don't think it's superficial or dismissive to consider Sayo's behavior as selfish. We are who we are because of how we act, and how we feel about those actions. Blame may be shared among various parties in what made Sayo's tragic life what it is, but it's ultimately up to her to determine how she responds to her circumstances, and honestly she went too far in the end. You think of Sayo this way because it's easy to empathize with her struggles, but it's equally crucial to recognize the moral implications of her decisions and the consequences they had for Ange and her whole family. There's also the fact that Sayo clearly has some mental disorder, and the real question lies in whether we can blame a delusional person or not. I think we can judge by looking at how Sayo felt at the end, as it is clear that she felt guilty for her own actions, since she committed suicide by drowning to escape from her life and wrongdoings. The truth is that Sayo was too much of a coward to die alone, so she planned to take the others with her, and that's a selfish desire.
I believe that no one is born intrinsically evil (if such thing exist), just different in mind and heart. It's all a matter of perspective, and we can all agree that Umineko is a story about flawed characters and how they influence those around them, for good or bad, such it's life. Sayo is not evil imo, just flawed/broken and victim of herself/others. I got bored out of my mind just thinking about all this.

To an extent, everyone is a victim of Kinzo's romanticism and debauchery. But being a victim doesn't justify creating more. I remember r07 once expressed annoyance that people were more sympathetic towards Ange than Yasu, but thats how it should be. Once you decide other people's lives are an acceptable means towards an end - even the most beautiful end - you become a villain

But im just a weirdo who feels more sympathy for jessica and eva than Yasu, even though no songs were written for them beyond tsurupettan
