Having done a LOT of research on the topic, I've concluded that is the case. The birth decline can be traced back and I believe the zero-event was the late feminist movement in Japan.

1. Japanese women experience feminist movement
2. Slow change in gender attitudes
3. Older men cling to older values
4. Older men try to discourage women from working by threatening to fire anyone who gets pregnant (its not like in America. Women can EITHER/OR be a housewaifu or a workingal, not both)
5. Women accepting the challenge and choosing not to marry
6. Japanese men fear the now-corrupt union of the materialistic girl with a strong sense of self
7. Japanese men having problems getting a job due to global recession and all the old jobs being hogged by the elderly elite
8. Japanese men take jobs that are unable to provide for a family (i.e. Freeters), or are so discouraged that they retreat to their rooms (Hikkikomori)
9. Less couples are formed
10. Less people have sex (evident by lack of condom sales)
11. Nobody gets pregnant with one sexing (rarely). Generating babies takes a lot of sex.
12. Japanese couples have infinitely LESS SEX than the rest of the world, but they probably think about it the most
13. Indulgence in anime/hentai/nijigen (2-d)
14. Drop in the birth rates
15. Large elderly population = increase in death rates
16. Japanese crisis of population within the next decade

The most viable solution, imo, is to loosen regulations on foreigners entering the country. Many right-wing Japs would rather rebuild the workforce with robots (neverminding the problem of rebuilding the population, according to them) or rather straight-up die.

For as much as I love Japan, even I admit it is a seriously fucked-up country. But I'm used to it, I live in America. No country is truly not-fucked-up.
