Ah, thanks for elaborating on what you mean. I sort of see the same pattern with SDM, though: in this case Remilia is the boss and Sakuya is both the "highest power level" (notwithstanding the Scarlets I guess) and "get shit done" character. The rest of them are "henchmen", although you're right in that they'll occasionally fill different roles at times (eg. Patchouli or Meiling are the ones that "get shit done" sometimes). And yeah, their large size allows for more varied interactions within the group.
I also didn't think of how varied the environments are within the SDM region itself. I can see how that can be stimulating to writers, as well as how it creates different settings for ZUN to expand with lore. From a gameplay perspective, I can see why this sense of scale can be considered memorable to some; it feels like a grand adventure when you're jumping from setpiece to setpiece. I feel the same way about some of the other games; MoF is a great example.

I always thought most Windows games were pretty literal about how they represented their environments (one notable exception being TD). I see this more so in PC-98, and honestly I wish it was more common. The abstract and surreal visuals create a fantastical and dreamlike environment, which is such a perfectly fitting motif for Gensokyo as a setting. This is supposed to be where the boundaries between fact and fiction are blurred, so for everything to look and feel as if it's made from the subconscious is a perfect representation of that.
