Learning a language exclusively because it has some practical "utility", like getting a job or something, is generally a bad idea. You need to have a personal interest or reason in learning a language (or any skill) if you really want to see it through to the end. Assuming you're not obligated to learn it through school or living in Japan or something, because then you have external factors to keep you responsible and consistent.

But if by "real utility" you just mean using Japanese for any reason outside of "because I can", then there's loads of reasons to learn it. It's hard to explain or understand until you see it for yourself, but it's more than just reading or watching stuff in Japanese. I saw a post here several years back that described it pretty well, but to quote a small part of it, "At a fundamental level, any time anyone in any way associated with making the stuff you like speaks or writes anything at all, they’re creating more Japanese that would have to be translated for you." People like to think everything's translated nowadays, but ask yourself how often you read articles or watch videos or watch streams or talk to friends or read forum posts or social media posts about your non-Japanese hobbies and interests. Knowing Japanese allows you to do all that with your Japanese hobbies and interests, because that's shit you can't rely on being translated. And this is without mentioning unreliable translations or stuff that isn't even translated. If you just wanted to watch anime without subtitles just so you can say you watch anime without subtitles, then yeah there's no point in learning Japanese. But if you have a genuine interest in otaku culture, then knowing the language it's produced in is insanely useful.

>are you optimistic about consummerism culture?
what do you have to gain anymore from collecting plastic shit and soulless merch aimed to women?
the suits discovered that lonely, unemployed men have less money than employed but extremely lonely women
>the userbase
the entire "otaku culture" is infested and there's no gap between non otaku and otaku, there wasn't enough gatekeeping and the entirey of the hobby is surface level puddle deep for everyone
>anime
anime is 3DCG'd and is highly accessible through pay per view subscription methods who are incredibly popular, and mind it, they're not even anime focused. The "big" and important show are on netflix. Anime is mass produced, there's no animation, there's no legacy, everything is outsourced or 3D sourced. Also there are fewer projects, the majority of the shit that gets aired comes from shitty entry level manga.
>payment systems
the weeaboo audience is content and happy to pay anime websites to put shitty subs on their cartoons, no questions asked. Subs are trash and are made by twitter cancel mob sjws who happen to know basic level japanese for some reason
>what's there to gain anymore than you already have
nothing. you're here out of habit, you watch shit out of habit, you play games out of habit
you're in your 30s, don't pretend zoomers come posting here. there's nothing more for us to gain, there's no enjoyment or discussions anymore.
>the board
as far as subculture goes, you want to have discussions. But in the current day and age you cannot go on the internet and speak freely anymore
where are you gonna go? reddit? tumblr? twitter? these places are infested by the lowest common denominator of people who happen to share the same hobby as you. not even in your wildest fantasies you would've imagined to share your interest with such people, but it happened. because you kept on shilling your hobbies on the internet and it snowballed back at you. no gatekeeping led to this
>the board
/jp/ is barely a board. It's a board dedicated to japanese culture, yet I only see mass consumer advertising in here. onahole general? fucking voice actors general? idol general? tv general? all you can discuss about is media consumption
there's nothing discussed about japan in this board
no kanji general, no prefectures general, no local festival general, no japanese literature general, no japanese language general (no, that djt shit doesn't fucking count), no resources general, no housing discussions, no folklore discussion, no japanese history discussion, there's nothing about japanese culture in this board and in the entire hobby as whole. Otaku culture is trash
Anno is right, Miyazaki is right, every japanese oldman who work in this kind of industry is right
It's all trash
spare me your memes and your rethoric, it won't go anywhere
if you search long enough you'll find an answer in yourself and you'll come to this post's same conclusions

I'm a professional who is looking at moving to Tokyo from the West in the next couple of years, so a similar situation to you. My job is internationally mobile and I have expatted in Hong Kong and Singapore in the past. The barriers I see are:

>assimilation
The xenophobia and racism is real. You will never be able to fully avoid this but I think it goes a long way to be capable in the language (I am also ethnically Asian so am hoping to get by in public). Conversely the Japanese have terrible English skills as a nation so it's for your sake as well. The jaded expat stories come from people who stopped making an effort, found themselves isolated and retreated into expat social circles where they became an ostracised minority. There's no Western ideal of being accepted no matter where you are from or what you look like, with Japan you either fall in line or fuck off. This isn't a reason not to go, but it is something to have your eyes open about if you do go.

>work ethic
Working hours will be terrible. I think you can only mitigate this by joining a gaijin company with gaijin values, but even then many are local outposts of international businesses so it will be a tough going either way. Never, ever work for a local Japanese company.

>cost of living
This is high, as other anons have said. Food is expensive, you'll be working long hours so will not have time to cook regularly, and 1-person accommodation will be tiny. I suppose if you're a buyfag then at least you avoid getting scalped on the regular by shipping and proxy service costs.

Even with all these challenges, I want to do it anyway. I really doubt the hours will be worse than HK or Singapore given that the working culture there is already fucking nuts, and I was able to handle both places. In the end, for me it is about this as you've said >What I do expect however is being closer to the things I enjoy and to the culture I got to like through the media I consumed over the years.

In HK there were regular, high-quality cosplay events held throughout the year, and lots of hobbyists and fans out in the open. People decked out local buses to celebrate Rushia and Suisei's birthdays. Anime wasn't treated as some kind of fringe interest and mistaken for hentai and child porn, series like Haikyuu or KnB have actually sparked a huge uptake in their sports with middle and high schoolers. Parents took their young children to cons to pose with tokusatsu cosplayers. Otaku shit has been my main interest for a lifetime, and if that is not going to change there is no reason to not want to be closer to it for personal fulfilment. I don't think I would stay in Japan forever even if I moved there, but I know I'll look back one day and regret if I never end up going.

I appreciate this thread and jp as a board. I feel that generally we are gradually being drowned out by people who have no interest in understanding the cornerstones of the culture. Most people are dismissive of VNs, doujin media or older anime and it seems to be getting harder to rekindle that in a lot of regards. I don't necessarily see issues with there being a larger group interested in anime, however, people in that group who consider themselves fanatics in the same regard as the more dedicated are frustrating, especially when they feel some sort of ownership over the same discussion spaces.

In regards to Akiba, while yes, there are many concessions for foreigners or more surface-level interests, it still doesn't seem to fail at catering to the core otaku for the most part and as long as it can fulfill that role it will still play a significant role in the core culture. If you know where you're going, you can mostly spend the day without seeing gaijin who showed up to cross an attraction off their list.

That said, the way Akiba is today did give me a unique appreciation of Denden Town and it's moderately more niche appeal.
